Francis Towne was a Landscape Artist from the mid 1700's who used water colour and ink as his main medium. Even though his Artwork was of Landscapes, I feel as though they would be perfect inspiration for backgrounds used for animations because of how scenic yet fairly illustrative they are.
His work centers around scenery from around the world. Using water colour to create depth and shadow, and using black ink to lightly outline shapes and add definition create an illustrative feel to his work.
His illustrative style is shown more clearly in this piece. From a distance, it looks like a detailed painting, but up close, you can see how abstract the background colours are and the scratchy and thin outlines created wight he black ink.
However, up close, you can see the detail where he has used black ink to outline shapes and add definition. This technique has been round for years, and is used in a lot of art, however the look that Towne's creates in his many pieces have an illustrative style to them that is often used in backgrounds.
This one in particular would be a perfect angle for a transition shot in order to establish the surroundings of a character. The depth created through the varying shades that deepen depending on the shadows or the archway in the distance, creates a sense of perspective. Townes successfully captures a sense of depth in his scenery's.
