The character Snotlout from the How to train your Dragon movies is an arrogant, selfish and narcissistic character. I decided to look into the character design for this character because during early concepts, there was the consideration of making Snotlout a girl, so there is a great range of experimentation.
The Majority of the character design was created by Neco Marlet.
The character designs are detailed, and the style resonates in the final film. The scruffy attire and the simple facial features translate well to 3D. I enjoy Marlet's designs because of the sketchy, and burnt look. Using tinted sheets of paper making the colours stand out and also can create a soft atmosphere around the character. The combination of dark colours and the range of line tie the characters physique together.
These two images where created by a different concept artist. The style is still quite similar, however you can see how drastically different the artists interpretation of the characters description is. This artists lines are smoother, due to it being digitally rendered, which can give a different aesthetic to the character. The interpretation of the character on the right is very different from the previous ones. The colours are dull, and the character seems more reserved and less expressive.
Here are the designs for the character to be a boy. You can see the similarities between the male and female designs from the face shape, outfit and the helmet. Shading has been added to the colours and skin to create more of a 3D feel to successfully translate to the next production process.
Here, is the character with his dragon counterpart. The characters attitude and personality is captured in his stance, outfit and his dragon. The sharp edges and large body help depict the characters ego, as well as his scruffy appearance to fit in with the overall aesthetic of the film.
