I decided to focus on the opening scene of the Pixar feature, WALL-E.
The opening shots consists of sweeping camera angles through a foggy and derelict world of trash, establishing the world that the character, WALL-E lives in. The cold hues created from the dusty browns evoke a sense of vastness and an aged era. Manipulating camera angles into motions help capture the essence of the scenery. Here, it captures the vastness of the world and also create a lonely atmosphere.
There is no dialogue for the first part of the movie. The opening sequence focuses on establishing the scenery and emphasising the loneliness. This is a great technique when attempting to capture a large scenery.
The boxes of trash that are piled sky high and meshed in between the actual skyscrapers add a sense of normality to the scenery. The murky sky and air hint at the state of the world. It tells us that it's old, dirty and deserted. Using fogs and mists can help depict the healthiness of the atmosphere.
