Extended - statement of intent presentation

As a group, we got together because we all have similar interests, and want to create something funny and entertaining as well as visually unique.

My individual statement of intent

I want to create an animated short based around challenging character animation and narrative. My intent for extended is to develop my character design skills as well as my animation skills. I want to create a short animation that could be developed into an on-going series or a longer animated short as I feel 3 minutes is enough time to communicate a concept, but I would want to leave it with an open ending in hopes of developing the concept further. I also want to have a decent amount of input into the script writing as well, because I am questioning script writing and what goes into an animated sitcom in my Context of Practice essay, so I feel like I could put what I learn into practice in my extended project. I am currently studying comedy within an animated sitcom, so I feel as though this research is relevant to my extended practice.

My groups idea is based around two characters that live together who are internet vloggers. The camera shots will be through the lenses of their characters, and what they shoot and how they shoot will determine how their attitudes and personalities come across. We want it all to be based inside of their house, to demonstrate their dynamic. The short will end with them both sat on the roof of their house as meteorite crashes on top of their neighbour’s house.

I plan on taking on the role as lead character designer in my project with Tess and Meg as they both suggested I should take on the role. I also feel like our script and story is collaborative up to this point, and I would like to help put together the script. I plan on focusing mostly on the pre-production side of the response, however I do also plan on animating the characters as well. We are still in the early days of deciding which roles people are taking on, however I do feel more comfortable in the pre-production stages, but I would also like to develop work for my show reel, so I do want to animated either one of the characters or help animating. Depending on how we want our animation to look and move depends on what aesthetic we decide on and also who animates what. I feel like to keep the consistency of the characters movements and personalities; one person should animate one character and another person animate the other. However, the interactions between the two characters could cause some issues if they’re animated by two different people.

For the smaller briefs, I would like to focus mostly on responding to the loopdeloop briefs as they seem to get me into the swing of animating when I get stuck in a project. I also intend on responding to the D&AD Beano brief as it is asking for a re-design for a character.

In conclusion, I intend on taking on quite a few roles and tasks in order for me to finish this year with a decent show reel and hopefully an animated short that I can submit to festivals.
