We decided to meet up at the beginning of the week instead of on Thursday as Sophie and Bronte had time tabled sessions.
I decided to take it upon myself to create a couple of designs that would go in between the stickers that would be placed on the poster. I decided to do some bubbles because it is underwater, as well as some little star fish and some fish.
I also decided to research and refine some facts on the 3 creatures that we would put on the card designs.
The facts that I found were extremely lengthy and would not be very engaging for children, so at a later date we will sit down as a group and re-word these facts to better suit our target audience.
Sophie created a composition template for us all to reference when creating our mock up designs as we decided that we would have a card, illustration and a selection of facts each to play around with. We decided to do this so we could all contribute and no one would feel like they were not having much of an input. We also did this as a way of giving everyone creative freedom of what they wanted the card to look like as some of us wanted a flat, block coloured background, whereas others wanted watercolour backgrounds.
Crit session.
For our crit, we sat down together and created a small presentation to show. Here are a few slides from the presentation.
The design on the right is a design that Bronte had come up with. Even though as a group we all decided we wanted to use watercolour backgrounds, she wanted to see what it would look like with a blue gradient background.
When presenting to the group, we discussed our ideas of layout and clearly articulated the style that we wanted to emulate by showing examples such as the anorak mag, and illustrators such as Rob Hodgson.
When we asked what the group thought about our colour scheme, they seemed to like it. They also seemed to praise us for having a more practical approach to the brief rather than producing everything digitally.
Sophie researched and demonstrated her typography research as well as her own designs. The group said that we should reconsider the title and call it "Deep Sea Discovery" in order to have alliteration in the title that children are familiar with.
We discussed how we wanted to create a visually interesting response to the brief and also attain a unique and modern style in the illustrations.
We explained our aims and what we would be considering throughout our design process such as target audience, and what was being asked of us by Bear.
During the presentation, the tutor told us that we should design characters that have more of a narrative. We got up a couple of my sketches and he advised us that we should use them, however after the group crit this was never discussed again, so we ended up continuing to use Bronte's designs.
Overall, I feel like the crit session was very helpful, however I also feel like my group wanted to ignore what was said because we had already done a lot of the work at this point.
Our next step is to colour the illustrations, and put together our final designs.
