Applied Animation - Week 3

This week, we decided to develop our concept further. We wanted to start working on a script that would consist of bigoted and ridiculous internet comments based around homelessness and poverty. As a group, we split off and did our own research into quotes on various videos that were based on poverty. I decided to focus mainly on social experiments where people would film themselves giving to the homeless to make themselves look amazing, which is sort of what we want Kieth to be. I also looked at videos of tv shows like Benefits Streets.

These are some of the quotes that we found as a group. Our next step with these are to pick out the best suited ones as well as compare them to our list of scenarios that we created to see what scenes would work with what quotes.

We also discussed ideas of what characteristics we wanted our character to have. We wanted him to be heavy breathing quite a lot and also have a speech impediment. We thought that it would be hilarious if he would prop his leg on random things like bins, benches and homeless people.

This lead me to create this quick sketch of Keith. I feel like I'm getting there with his design and overall look slowly. I feel a lot of pressure because this is my first time working in a group, and Keith is the focal point of our animation so I feel as though I'm quite hard on myself when it comes to experimenting with his look.

Because we want our animation to be a mixture of mediums, I decided to use water colours to create a small concept drawing. His hair still doesn't look right, so I decided to put a bit of brown watercolour and then use black ink over the top to se what he would look like. I still think it isn't right as this point so my next step is to experiment further with his hair.

Because his spicy calves are one of his key attributes, I wanted to find the perfect shape. I quite like the look of the angular shape of his calves, as well as his black pointed shoes. I am still toying with whether he should have his pants rolled up to show his calves, or to have the bottom of this pants tucked into his socks.

I decided to use oil pastel to go around the edges of Keith's body and then use water colour over the top to bring out the texture and contrast of the oil pastel. I am still unsure about the colours, however I still want him to have a tweed jacket as well as a ridiculous collar. I think his face shape is getting there as well. He is meat to be quite a small man but I want his head to be quite big, and his eyes, hair and eye brows to be ridiculous. His belly and bottom need to be big and round in order to contrast his smaller but angular calves.

Overall, I feel as though me and my group are all on the same page. We all have roles to continue with but our main focus is to get a script together.
