Charles manx - Visual Research

Charles Manx is one of the main characters in the novel. He is described and a fragile, old, thin and vampire- like man. Because the book is heavily influenced by the iconic figure Nosferatu, I decided to do some visual research into this icon.

Even though I'm not featuring Charles Manx as a whole character, there will be certain visuals that I want to include in the shots that I will create. The features include, hands, silhouette and his face in the moon.

KinoMax Schreck as the vampire in F.W. Murnau's 1922 film "Nosferatu." The Dracula in Bram Stoker's novel was closer to Schreck's portrayal than to the ...:
Max Schreck, Nosferatu, 1922. By far, the creepiest vampire ever.:

I found this image off pinterest. The style is similar to the graphic novel created based on the book, and the physical appearance of the character is similar to the character I need to design.

one of the many iconic shots in Murnau's Nosferatu.:

in NOS4R2 the book, Charles Manx is described as having thin, long old hands. I like this silhouetted image because it demonstrates the figure of the character.

Nosferatu - Tristan Jones:

Because I aim to use ink, I quite like this depiction of the character Nosferatu. In my design process I will hopefully use different mediums in order to find mediums to use in the final animation.

Nosferatu.!:

This painted image of the character inspired me to add colour to my animation because originally I was going to have my animation black and white to fit in with dark themes, but this piece of work is really captivating. Obviously, I won't use the same level of detail because that would be far too time consuming, and I want my animation to be quite rough and sketchy.

As Blanche sits in the tub singing “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” Stanley tells Stella about Blanche sleeping around and that being the real reason she left town.:

Here, I researched into crescent moon shapes as Charles Manx face is seen in the shape of a crescent moon. I tried to find images that have a dark atmosphere.

" The lingering moon caught Cinder’s attention, and a shock of goose bumps covered her arms. The moon had always given her a sense of paranoia, like the people who lived up there could be watching her, and if she stared for too long, she might draw their attention. ":

I quite like the fogginess that the clouds create around the luminosity of the moon.

I quite like the profile of this character. However in my sketches, I have drawn him with a more menacing look

Overall, I feel as though I have created a nice set of inspiration and research for my character. Even though my intention with him is to only have his face showing, understanding the form of his face would be helpful for me.
